María Torcello was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on September 16, 1978. Self-taught. She uses art as a tool for self-knowledge and transmutation. Since 1999, wood has been her medium for creating works that connect us with the beauty and absolute purity of all things. Through movement, sensuality, synthesis of form and a subtle finish, she creates three-dimensional sculptures that evoke the mysterious, the invisible and the infinite. Materiality plays a fundamental role in each of her works.
She finds a fascinating relationship between working with wood and the work that knowing oneself requires. She usually works with recycled wood, seeking the natural beauty that holds its marks and stories, life, death and resurrection, where the essence of the material emerges as if by magic. Today she also finds in bronze a way to perceive the pure light the material contains, a glow glimpsed as if behind the veil of its patinas or its polish, its appearance changing with the light reflected on it.
